What are a child’s needs and what you can do to help

Compassion, caring, empathy, responsibility, ethics and other values are developed during childhood. Parents and adults should help cultivate these values in children so that they can become responsible and caring adults. Children who build empathy at a young age are more likely to become happy and successful adults. 

But for children to develop these values, parents are expected to provide all the needs of their children. Identifying a child’s physical conditions, such as food, clothing, shelter, rest, and recreation is easy. 

But recognizing their emotional and mental needs may not that easy. Encouragements from parents and friends can go a long way in developing the child’s self-esteem, self-confidence and emotional intelligence. I took this advice from Allan from newcastle kitchen renovations.

Physical Needs

A child needs a lot of things to maintain good physical health. The first five years is crucial since they develop at a faster rate during this period. 

Good nutrition is essential in the development of a child. Good food is linked to satisfactory academic performance in school, especially during the early school age. It also helps in the development of the brain and maintaining overall physical health. Children that are appropriately nourished have a lesser risk of illness and will eventually become healthy adults in the future. 

Proper healthcare and hygiene are also essential. Children need to be given access to vaccines, medicines, medical care and regular check-ups from doctors and dentists. They should have access to potable drinking water and proper hygiene. A hygienic and healthy environment prevents diseases and infections in children. Parents should also provide adequate shelter to children where they can sleep and rest.   

Mental and Emotional Needs

The naked eye can see not all needs, and parent or caregivers should realize that children also need a lot of emotional and mental support. Acceptance, love and security should be at the core of family life. Children need to feel the unconditional love of their parents and adults to develop excellent mental and emotional wellness. 

Parents and adults should help nurture and develop the confidence and self-esteem of children. Praise them on their small achievements and let them explore their surroundings. Providing enough time for children to play and participate in activities develops their confidence. 

But providing their emotional and mental needs does not mean that we hide their failures from them. Parents should also offer their children with needed feedback when they do something wrong. It provides a necessary foundation for them so that when they become adults, they would even realize their own mistakes and learn to forgive others for their errors. 

Children also need time to be with their peers and friends. Playing develops social skills, a sense of belonging and how to deal with people with different background and temperament. Parents should provide time for their children to play with others and develop their interpersonal skills. 

Children need guidance and positive discipline. They need to realize that certain behaviours are unacceptable and have consequences. Parents need to establish house rules that are consistent and should be followed by everyone, including the adults. These will eventually translate to a responsible and caring adult in the future. 

Children often have fears and anxieties that may not be obvious. They need a patient, loving and reassuring adult to help them with their fears and anxieties. Shyness, withdrawal or nervous mannerisms are signs of children’s fears and anxieties. If you suspect something, you should talk to the teachers or mental health professional to provide the help needed. 

Providing a safe and loving environment is our duty as parents and adults. Having good open communication with children is essential.
